NEIL SPILLER
Letter of support
To whom it may concern
Application no. P/FUL/2021/04073 - Masonic Hall installation of artwork to front elevation - School Street Weymouth.
I have recently been made aware of this application and am writing in full support for it. As a Professor of Architecture, currently Editor of Architectural Design previously Hawksmoor Chair of Architecture and Landscape at the University of Greenwich and Vice Dean Bartlett Faculty of Built Environment at University College London, I can see nothing but merit in Professor Michael Sandle RA’s proposition. As well as impressively designed, it is also multivalent in its meanings and symbolism commemorating Weymouth’s heroic contribution to World I and II, yet also depicting Faith and Hope in human form.
In my opinion Weymouth would be lucky to have such an eloquent work giving, what at the moment is a fairly mundane building, an original and vivacious presence that resonates with its own past in the town.
I have been an admirer of Professor Sandle’s work since the mid Eighties. Particularly admiring his ability to memorialize and not shy away from difficult events in human history. I take the opportunity to forward an essay I wrote on his work recently for Architectural Design, which was published internationally.
In short, another Michael Sandle masterpiece, I hope you look favourably on this great opportunity.
Yours sincerely,
